Superb pastel painting depicting a helmsman aboard his ship, holding the wheel. This painting was exhibited in 1904 at the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, in Angers. Its attractive original Art Nouveau frame is in good general condition, although it has several flaws (see photos).
Guillaume Alaux (1856-1912) was a landscape painter and pastel artist from Bordeaux. He was born on September 16, 1856 into a dynasty of painters and architects - of exceptional longevity since it spread over three centuries and eight generations of artists - Guillaume Alaux received academic training at the National School of Fine Arts in Paris following the courses of Léon Bonnat and Henri Gervex. Without achieving the notoriety of these “dear masters” of the Ille République, he notably painted landscapes of the Arcachon Basin and the Bordeaux countryside, and internationally, worked and exhibit in Europe and the United States. He specialized in marine paintings which he exhibited at the Salons des Artistes Français, then at the Nationale des Beaux-Arts, where he acquired a solid reputation as a society portraitist. He was also renown for his genre scenes and excelled in the pastel technique.
Guillaume Alaux died in Bordeaux on August 3, 1912, at the age of 55.
