About the Painting

This oil on wood landscape, painted around 1990, depicts the rolling hills of the Luberon region in Provence. Titled by the artist on the verso as "Luberon's Hills," the work captures the distinctive character of this celebrated landscape in southeastern France. Signed in the lower right corner, the painting demonstrates Serge Devic's mature style, characterized by his intimate knowledge of the Provençal countryside and his ability to render the region's unique light and topography.

The composition reflects Devic's dual training as both architect and painter, evident in his careful attention to spatial relationships and structural elements within the landscape. His approach combines observational precision with a contemporary sensibility, creating works that honor the Provençal landscape tradition while maintaining a distinctly modern voice.

About the Artist

Serge Charles Devic Arroyo (1941-2019) was a French painter, architect, and writer whose work centered on the landscapes and life of Provence. Born in Algiers on January 15, 1941, he moved with his family to the south of France following Algerian independence. This relocation would prove formative, as the Provençal landscape became the primary subject of his artistic career.

Devic studied architecture and painting at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, developing a foundation that informed both his technical approach and his understanding of spatial composition. His dual training as architect and painter gave him a unique perspective on landscape, combining structural analysis with painterly sensitivity.

Between 1983 and 1998, Devic exhibited regularly at prominent galleries including Galerie Vendôme in Paris and Vent des Cîmes in Grenoble. His work gained recognition for its authentic portrayal of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence region, where he lived and worked for much of his career.

His artistic output primarily comprises landscapes of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, though he also created still lifes, portraits, and genre scenes. His landscapes are particularly noted for their faithful rendering of the region's distinctive light, vegetation, and architectural elements, capturing both the grandeur and intimacy of the Provençal countryside.

Serge Devic died in Banon, Haute-Provence, on July 10, 2019, at the age of 78, leaving behind a substantial body of work documenting the landscape he called home for most of his life.
