This striking portrait by Edmond Dutry captures the commanding presence of a man with piercing blue eyes. Executed in oil on canvas, the painting embodies Dutry’s signature style: a masterful balance between expression and meticulous detail. The work, circa 1935, although unsigned and unframed, has been preserved in excellent condition, showcasing the artist’s exceptional technique.

Born in Kalken, Belgium, on August 30, 1897, Edmond Dutry came from a family steeped in artistic and intellectual pursuits. His father, Albert Dutry, was a renowned lawyer, justice of the peace, and painter, while his mother, Marie Odile Dutry-Tibbaut, was celebrated for her watercolor and pastel artworks. Following World War I, Edmond embraced his vocation as a painter, establishing a studio on the Recolettenlei in Ghent.

Dutry’s artistic career flourished through regular exhibitions at the Ghent Salon. His oeuvre spans a wide range of subjects, including evocative cityscapes of Ghent, still lifes, figures, and, most notably, portraits. Known for his deeply expressive approach, Dutry sought to capture the essence of his subjects, pushing the boundaries of character study.

Edmond Dutry passed away in Ghent on February 8, 1959, leaving behind a body of work that continues to resonate with collectors and art enthusiasts alike.
