Customs & Import FAQ

Importing Art from Canada: What You Need to Know

Customs and Duties

For international orders, customs duties and taxes may apply depending on your country's regulations. These fees are the responsibility of the buyer and are not included in the shipping cost.

Will I have to pay import duties?

Original paintings, drawings, and period frames are classified as original works of art and generally benefit from reduced or zero import tariffs in most countries. However, the exact conditions depend on the customs classification of each piece and your country of destination. We recommend consulting your local customs authority or a customs broker to confirm the conditions applicable to your purchase.

Will I have to pay VAT or import taxes?

In most EU countries and in the United Kingdom, imports from outside the EU/UK are subject to the import VAT of the destination country, applied on the value of the artwork plus shipping costs. This amount is typically managed by the carrier at the time of delivery and can be paid directly to the customs agency. To find out the applicable rate in your country, please consult your local tax authority or a customs broker.

What documentation is included with the shipment?

Every international shipment includes:

  • Commercial invoice with a detailed description of the artwork, its value, and classification as an original work of art
  • Certificate of authenticity where applicable
  • Export documentation required by Canadian authorities
