Roman Peasant – French School – Circa 1840

Watercolour depicting an Italian peasant dressed in a traditional regional costume, painted around 1840. It is unsigned but has a pencil annotation “Rome” in the lower right corner. The painting bears a striking resemblance to a series of watercolours by French artist Dominique Louis Auguste Papety (1815-1849) on the theme of Italian traditional costumes. Overall good condition, some mild foxing spots. The paper is evenly browned and is housed under glass in a wooden frame. Dimensions of the paper: 30 x 22 cm. / 12 x 8.5 in. Inner dimensions of mat: 28 x 14 cm. / 11 x 6 in.
