Portrait of an old fisherman from the island of Batz, a small island town located off Roscoff in northern Finistère in Brittany (north-western France). Unsigned high quality oil on canvas. There is an old label affixed to the back with a handwritten inscription probably indicating the name of the artist (illegible) and the text in French: “Made on the island of Batz, Finistère”. Also noteworthy, there is a supplier’s mark on the back of the canvas: De Saint-Martin (Veuve) et frère, La Palette de Rubens, art supplies merchants operating in Paris (4, rue de Seine) between 1865 and 1898; this stamp allows us to approximately date this painting. There is also a hand-written annotation in pencil on the stretcher with the word Hanse (?). This painting is in very good condition and has undergone a recent cleaning.
