Our elegant sitter is dressed and combed as per the style of the times, wearing a black suit, a narrow grey waistcoat, a white shirt and black bow tie. This young man might have been a Spanish trader with ties to Latin America, since he holds a lit cigar in his hand and on the table in front of him we see a tipped multicolour case, several cigars and a row of matches. Behind him, a classic-style column and a thick ochre curtain close the space.
