Elaine Grimshaw – Still Life with Apples

Elegant still life composition consisting of a plate with a variety of apples, a dark green jug and a peacock feather. These elements are laid out on a draped fleur-de-lys patterned cloth that also serves as a backdrop. This oil on canvas painting is signed and dated 1914 in the lower left corner.

Elaine Katherine Grimshaw was a British painter. Born on 23 February 1877 in Scarborough (Yorkshire). She was the daughter of the famous painter John Atkinson Grimshaw (1836 - 1893), one of the best-loved painters who lived in the Victorian era. In 1899, she married Edmund Ragland Phillips. She then went to study at Balliol College Oxford and whilst there she attended the Ruskin School of Art Oxford.

Elaine Grimshaw was sister of the painters Arthur E. Grimshaw (1864-1913), Louis H. Grimshaw (1870-1944) and Wilfred Grimshaw (1871-1937). She died on 17 November 1970 at the age of 94 at Holly Bush, Scotton, North Yorkshire.
