Edmond van Coppenolle – Flowers in a Vase

on Mar 31, 2023
Pierre François Edmond Van Coppenolle was born in Renaix, Belgium, on 29 June 1846. Pupil of Louis Aumont, in 1872 he moved to Montigny, close to Moret-sur-Loing in France to work at Eugène Schopin’s newly opened porcelain workshop. Here he produced sketches and studies in Indian ink, wash and crayon, which were in turn used to decorate porcelain vases and chargers. Coppenolle was renowned for his floral oil paintings. Although influenced by the 17th century painters from the Netherlands, he was also aware of the growing fashion in France for garden flowers and more natural-looking flower paintings. His floral still lifes also show a clear Impressionist influence, emphasising the use of a colourful palette and a robust brushstroke.Artist: Edmond Van Coppenolle (1846-1914).Signed in the lower right corner.Medium: Oil on canvas.Condition: Very good condition, relined and restored.Dimensions: 65 x 54 cm. / 25 ½ x 21 ¼ in.Frame: 77 x 68 cm. / 30 ¼ x 26 ¼ in. Alfred Chagniot – Venetian Objects

on Aug 21, 2022
Oil on canvas post-impressionist still life painting depicting several Murano glass vessels and figurines set out informally on a table. The view through the window sets the scene in Venice. The painting’s title, “Objets vénitiens”, is written on the reverse. A number also appears on the back of the canvas (BE-1966). We believe this is an inventory number, either from a gallery or show where this painting was exhibited, or from an auction house. It is unlikely it represents the year of execution.Artist: Alfred Chagniot (1905-1991).Signed in the bottom right corner.Medium: Oil on canvas.Condition: Excellent condition.Dimensions: 45,5 x 56 cm. / 18 x 22 in.Frame: 61 x 70 cm. / 24 x 27 1/2 in. Henri Bérengier - Still Life with Squash - 1940

on Sep 15, 2020
Beautiful still life reminiscent of late 19th century painting. The elements in this painting are grouped under a food theme; we find a squash as its central attribute, surrounded by onions, eggs, a Chinese export porcelain platter, a bronze-glazed gilt ceramic bowl, an oil bottle and a white cloth. The sober treatment given to the background, the cloth and the peripheral objects draw the viewers’ attention to the intense colour and delicate beauty of the squash and plate, respectively.  Artist: Henri Bérengier (1880-1943).Signed and dated bottom left corner: “H. Bérengier 1940”.Medium: Oil on canvas.Condition: Excellent condition.Dimensions: 50 x 61 cm. / 19 3/4 x 24 in.Frame: 60 x 71 cm. / 23 1/2 x 28 in. Original, gilt wood.Origin: France.
