Emily Nonnen - Double Portrait Of The Nonnen Sisters
Share
Exquisite 19th-century oil portrait of Swedish artist Emily Nonnen and her sister Ann. Painted circa 1840, this rare Biedermeier-style work offers an intimate glimpse into Scandinavian female artistry. Ann’s hand resting on Emily’s shoulder symbolizes sisterly affection, while an open book suggests intellect or shared storytelling.
The unsigned painting remains in very good condition. Its period gilded frame shows signs of past restoration, adding historical character. A Swedish note on the canvas indicates it was painted by Emily Nonnen and dedicated to Elin Sinclair.
Emily Nonnen (1812–1906), a Swedish-British artist, author, and translator, was known for her portraits and literary translations. Her sister Ann (1815–1867) also trained as an artist and exhibited in London. This unique portrait is not only a fine example of 19th-century painting, but a valuable piece of Swedish cultural heritage reflecting the legacy of the talented Nonnen sisters.
