Alfred Garcement – Ducks on the River – Circa 1900

French painter of genre scenes and landscapes, Pierre Alfred Garcement was born in Varzy in 1842 and died there in the same city in 1927. A pupil at Varzy College, he received painting lessons from L. Peyranne, former pupil of Louis David, began studies at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in the Pils workshop and Hanoteau. He exhibited for the first time at the Paris Salon in 1868, before becoming a member of the Salon des Artistes Français in 1883 and receiving an honorable mention in 1896. The museums of Clamecy, Nevers and Varzy, have several of his works.
