18th Century French School

This exquisite French School portrait represents an elegant woman in rich clothing. She wears a delicate white lace blouse and cuffs in accordance with the standards of the period, under a rich red robe covered by a black lace hooded shawl. Her head is covered by a white lace head-dress visible under the hood. Her hands are hidden inside a thick fur muff. The subject appears seated in an interior setting with a drawn curtain in the background allowing the viewer to see the lower right corner of a framed painting or perhaps a window frame. The lighting is centred on the woman’s face, which is unequivocally the main focus of this portrait. She reflects a serene beauty with soft traits, captured with the artist’s almost invisible brush strokes. Oil on canvas unsigned and circa 1740.
