Gustave Assire – Luxembourg Gardens

Charming impressionist painting representing a corner of the Luxembourg park in Paris. Oil on wood, signed lower right and titled and signed by the artist on the reverse. This painting was exhibited at the Friends of the Arts Exhibition in Angers in February 1907.

Gustave Edmond Arsène Assire, born in Angers on October 31, 1870 and died in Paris on January 17, 1937, was a French painter, watercolourist and illustrator.

Assire studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, with Benjamin Constant, J.P. Laurens, Cormon and Gustave Moreau. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1900, at the Salon d'Automne and at the Independents (1927-1931) and at the Society of Independent Artists since January 1911. He had his studio at 16 rue de la Grande-Chaumière and later at 37 rue Lamarck. Assire is also known for his erotic watercolours representing balls, bistros, prostitutes, cabarets, or even the Moulin-Rouge.

He is the illustrator of the books Voyage du Centurion by Ernest Psichari, Intimate Liturgies by Paul Verlaine, The Confession of a Child of the Century by Alfred de Musset and Secret Images of Paris by Pierre Mac Orlan.
