Charming genre scene representing a cowherdess securing a gate in a beautiful hilly pasture setting, accompanied by her dog and a few cows. Very decorative. This oil on canvas painting stands out for its quality of execution as well as for the candid expressiveness of the portrayed female character. The back of the canvas is stamped: F.T. Edwards 91 Park St, Camden Town.
Frederick Thomas Edwards (London 1833-1895), British professor of drawing, painting and perspective, was listed as an artist or teacher of art rather than a colourman, but canvases with his name have been recorded from the 1860s and 1870s.
