Excellent oval portrait of a ship captain painted around 1860. He is represented on a ship deck, seated in a red velvet chair and leaning cross-armed on a wooden table. He is wearing a black coat and white scarf. On the table below his right elbow we can make out two small sea shells, whose meaning and symbolism are unknown.

Medium: Oil on canvas.
Condition: Very good condition.
Dimensions: 33 1/2 x 27 1/2 in. (85 x 70 cm.).
Frame: 37 1/2 x 31 1/2 in. (95 x 80 cm.). Oval, gilt wood. Very good condition.
