Portrait of a Dandy – Signed Bradley – 1939.
Portrait of an elegant thirty-something man, seated and turned towards his right with a distracted, thoughtful, perhaps sad look in his eyes. This modern art painting, with a clear fauvism influence, was painted in Mougins (France) in June 1939, according to the inscription on the upper edge of the canvas. Mougins is a small town near Cannes, a haven for many artists from around the world. Picasso had his house and studio there, where he died in 1973.
The painting is signed "Bradley, 39". Our research continues in the hope of definitively identifying this artist and being able to offer more information about him. At this point in our research we suspect the artist is British artist Frederick Bradley, who showed a portrait and two still-lifes at the Salon des Tuilleries in Paris in 1935.
