Alexis Hinsberger, French painter and sculptor, born 18 September 1907 in Cartagena, Spain, to a Spanish mother and a French father. Studied at the school of fine arts, and then at the school of arts and crafts in Barcelona (Spain). He lived and worked in Paris. He painted mostly actors and circus figures in a populist vein, in lighting effects that accentuated the Expressionist opposition between light and shade. His sculptures represented genre subjects: Don Quixote and Sancho, Carmen, Guitarist, Pierrot Violinist.
He participated in collective exhibitions in Paris including: Salon d'Automne, Salon Comparaisons, Salon des Artistes Francais, Salon des Indépendants and the Salon Populiste. He had solo exhibitions in Paris (1951, 1959, 1961, 1969, 1982), Barcelona (1952), Murcia (1968) y Madrid (1971). There is a stamp on the stretcher stating that this particular painting was exhibited at a retrospective of the artist’s work in Lille in 1990.
Alexis Hinsberger died in Paris January 1996.
