A beautifully and moody atmospheric view of early 20th-century Paris by French painter Pierre Farge (1878–1947). Capturing a quiet yet bustling boulevard, this oil painting reflects the charm and muted poetry of Parisian life through Farge’s unique, almost naïve lens. Subtle greys, browns, and soft blues evoke the weathered hues of the city’s sky, buildings, and streets. Oil on canvas in good condition, but perhaps a cleaning of the varnish would add more luminosity to the painting. Original frame.
Born in rural Corrèze and trained by life more than by academy, Farge moved to Montmartre in 1902, where he became part of a bohemian circle including Maurice Utrillo and Henri Rousseau. He began exhibiting in the late 1920s at major Parisian salons and became known for his humble, heartfelt views of the city’s landmarks and neighborhoods.
Farge's charm lies in his defiance of classical perspective—his works feel instinctive, intimate, and a little dreamlike. Signed P. Farge in the bottom right, this piece offers a nostalgic window into a bygone Paris.
