Oil on canvas painting representing a parade of different characters in a park. Created in 1867, the Parc des Buttes-Chaumont is the steepest and largest garden in Paris. It is a landscaped park, an evolved form of the Anglo-Chinese Garden, whose irregular design contrasts with the regular style of gardens known as “French style”. It presents a juxtaposition of paintings inspired by Fragonard landscapes, and above all by Hubert Robert, painter of Roman gardens. A rocky island stands in the centre of its lake, and reveals a romantic little temple of Sybille, which occupies the exact location of the old open-air quarry.
Pierre Farge, French painter and watercolourist, was born on July 28, 1878 in Marcillac-la-Croisille (Corrète), a small rural town in central France. Son of a carpenter, he emigrated to Paris at the age of 20, working as an itinerant carpenter, glazier and postman. After his marriage in 1902, he lived in Montmartre, where he developed his passion for painting. From 1928 he exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Indépendants and at the Salon des Tuileries from 1930.
Among the artists who greatly influenced Farge are his friends Maurice Utrillo and Henri Rousseau. Ignoring the tenets of classical perspective, Farge managed to create an innocent, yet childish view of the world. Like Utrillo, Farge tried to represent the iconic monuments and street scenes of Paris. He used muted hues, such as grey, beige, brown, and black, mirroring the hues of the Paris sky and adding intimacy and a poetic feeling to his work. He signed his works as either "Farge" or "P. Farge".
After a more than 20-year career as an artist, Pierre Farge returned to his hometown, where he died on December 27, 1947.
