Still Life with Flowers – Circa 1950

Colourful still life representing a bouquet of flowers in a vase, set in a perfect frame.

Nathan Gutman was a French painter and lithographer of Polish origin born in Warsaw in 1914 and died in Paris in 1990.

Nathan Gutman was a student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw from 1929 to 1933. After a brief stay in the USSR, during which he exhibited at the Museum of the Revolution in Minsk, he returned to Warsaw in 1945 and then emigrated to Paris. Very influenced by Emmanuel Mané-Katz (1894-1962), he painted various subjects, figures, still lifes, landscapes, seascapes and he often represented Jewish familiar scenes and festivals. A member of the School of Paris, his paintings are colourful and expressionist in style.
