Charming country scene representing a shepherd with his flock of sheep. The character is seated in the shade of a tree, in the company of his watchful dog. An adorable white lamb steals the show in the foreground.

Martin Coulaud was a French painter of animals, genre scenes and animated landscapes. He was born in Cournon-d'Auvergne (Puy-de-Dôme) on December 27, 1860. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Clermont. His works mainly depicted landscapes and characters from his native region, located in central of France. He exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français, where he was a member from 1903.

Martin Coulaud died in Paris on May 30, 1906, at the age of 45.
