Orientalist Landscape - Circa 1880
Edwin St. John (active 1870-1910) was a British watercolour landscape artist. He was quite prolific and painted many continental lake and town scenes in France, Switzerland and Italy as well as Eastern desert scenes – his best work usually dating from the 1870s and 1880s. His work shows considerable similarity to that of the painters Edwin Earp (1851-1945) and William Henry Earp (1833-?) and he may well have had some connection with these Brighton artists. He seems also to have painted under the pseudonym Frank Catano. He does not appear to have exhibited in London but his work was shown at Elands Art Gallery, Exeter, in 1907.
