This abstract painting depicts a rugged landscape, featuring a dead tree, and is rendered in oil on canvas using the palette knife technique. According a note by the artist on the back, this specific painting was commenced on December 10th, 1972 and completed on November 20th, 1973. 

Gérard Pierre Jean Martin Reynier was a French landscape painter from Provence. He was born on 13 February 1940 in Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône) and died on 25 December 2019 in Valergues (Hérault).

He studied painting and drawing with M. Allard, then entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Marseille in 1956. In 1959, he moved to Paris. He then settled in Rognes, near Aix-en-Provence, where his studio was located. He travelled extensively, visiting Spain, Greece, Italy, Holland, England, Switzerland, Morocco and Algeria.

He took part in group exhibitions: Casablanca, Biennale d'Aix-en-Provence and in individual exhibitions in France: Paris, Lyon, Clermont, Grenoble, Nice, Aix-en-Provence and above all he regularly exhibited his work at the Galerie du Lacydon in Marseille. Some of his works are exhibited at the Musée Granet (Aix-en-Provence) and the Musée Cantini (Marseille).
