Pastoral Scene – Circa 1880

Attractive painting representing a pastoral scene with a shepherd and his herd of cows, sheep and a dog. Signed in the lower left corner. Oil on canvas, relined. Beautiful wood and stucco frame with plant motifs.

Antonio Cortés y Aguilar was a Spanish painter. He was born in Seville (Spain) on March 10, 1827 and studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Santa Isabel of Hungary in his hometown. In 1855, he moved to Paris to attend the Universal Exhibition in Paris and settled permanently in France. He became a disciple of Constant Troyon (1810-1865), a famous painter of the Barbizon school, who had a great influence on him. From 1859, he devoted himself almost exclusively to the animal genre: the French countryside where oxen, cows and horses graze, under the care of a shepherd or a peasant woman. He also painted some portraits and religious paintings. He obtained a medal at the Paris Salon of 1858 and 1868. Father of the painter Edouard Cortés (1882-1969), he died in Lagny-sur-Marne (Seine-et-Marne) on March 14, 1908.

The Romanticism Museum in Madrid, the Bellver Collection in Seville, exhibit his works.
