Otto Johann Rut was an Austrian-Canadian landscape painter.
Born on 29 June 1910 in Schwechat, a town southwest of Vienna, he studied art at the art school in the capital. After the Second World War, he emigrated to Canada in 1950. Specialising in Canadian and European landscapes, the artist was able to capture a superior depth of field, mixing his own colour spectrum to recreate hues rarely seen outside of nature. His style could range from bold and dynamic to serene and subdued.
A tireless painter, he worked well into his 80s. His works are represented in numerous private art collections, mainly in Ontario and Quebec. The Ottawa City Hall owns one of his works.

From 1869 to 1873 he attended secondary school in Chemnitz. He then studied at the Art Academy in Dresden with Theodor Grosse, continued studying in Berlin and Stuttgart and from 11 February 1881 at the Royal Academy of Arts in Munich with Wilhelm von Lindensch the Younger, Sándor Wagner and Gyula Benczúr.
During his study trips to Italy, he visited the Pontificium Collegium Germanicum et Hungaricum in Rome, where he converted to the Catholic faith, and in 1898 and 1899 he produced two paintings for the college.
Paul Beckert married Annie Leontine von Frank in 1885, through whom he found access to the circles of the German high aristocracy. After the death of his first wife, he married Elisabeth Haenlein in 1907. On 14 June 1904 he was made a Knight of the Holy Order of Sylvester by Pope Pius X.
Paul Beckert painted mainly portraits of noble personages, as well as altarpieces and other church images. Many of his works were lost during the Second World War.
Paul Becker died on 22 September 1922 during a stay at a spa in Olsberg (North Rhine-Westphalia).

This is an antique portrait engraving featuring General Charles Pichegru during the French Revolution in circa 1798. It was created by Philippe Lefèvre and printed by the printer Robert Lefèvre after a painting by Hilaire Ledru. Lost caption below: "Sold in Paris at Potrelle Md. D'estampes Rue Honoré N°54".
Jean-Charles Pichegru, born in Planches-près-Arbois (Franche-Comté) on February 16, 1761, was a distinguished major-general during the French Revolutionary Wars. In 1789 he was a non-commissioned officer in an artillery regiment. He moved quickly up the ranks, from brigadier general to major-general. Under his command, French troops overran Belgium and the Netherlands before fighting on the Rhine front. He headed the Army of the Rhine and Moselle’s campaign to secure the French frontier at the Rhine and to penetrate the German states. The unsuccessful 1795 campaign led to his removal from command. His royalist positions led to his loss of power and imprisonment in Cayenne, French Guiana during the Coup of 18 Fructidor in 1797. After escaping into exile in London and joining the staff of Alexander Korsakov, he returned to France and planned the Pichegru Conspiracy to remove Napoleon from power, which led to his arrest. He was found strangled in prison on April 6, 1804. Despite his defection, his surname is one of the names inscribed under the Arc de Triomphe, on Column 3.
Philippe Lefèvre, painter and engraver, was born in Abbeville and worked in Paris between the years 1770-1810. He engraved historical portraits.
Hilaire Ledru, was born February 19, 1769 in Oppy (Pas-de-Calais) and died May 2, 1840 in Paris. He was a French painter and draughtsman, best known for his portraits of Republican and Napoleonic generals. He exhibited a drawing of Napoleon at the Salon of 1796.

Magnificent allegorical scene representing a young woman with an arrow, possibly Venus. This burin engraving, after a work by the French painter and engraver Pierre Bouillon (1776-1831), is originally titled in French "Il n'est plus tems". It is dedicated to His Excellency the Count of Cobenzl, referencing Johann Philipp, Graf von Cobenzl (May 28, 1741 - August 30, 1810), statesman of the Habsburg monarchy and the Austrian Empire. Between 1801 and 1805 he was the Austrian ambassador in Paris. The coat of arms belongs to the Cobenzl family. This work was registered at France’s National Library on 16 Ventose Year 12 (Republican calendar), i.e. March 7, 1804.
Pierre Audouin, (Paris, 1768 – Paris, July 22, 1822), was a French draughtsman and burin engraver. He studied under Beauvarlet, and engraved some of the Italian and Dutch masters' most captivating works for Laurent's Musée Français. He was influenced by the School of David. During the Empire period, he was awarded the title of engraver to Madame Mère, Letizia Bonaparte. He participated in the Livre du Sacre de l'Empereur (Book of the Coronation of the Emperor), 1804, creating three engravings after Jean-Baptiste Isabey. Subsequently, after the Restoration, he engraved the portraits of the princes of the royal family and of the main personalities of the time, including Wellington and Marmont, which earned him the title of engraver in ordinary to the King. He engraved paintings by Correggio, Raphaël, Eustache Lesueur, among others, works which made him a very fashionable artist in his day.

Etching representing a portrait of Françoise de Graffigny, bust directed to the left, wearing a bonnet and a fur-lined gown; in an oval frame, made in 1772, Levêque Sculp.
Françoise de Graffigny, born Françoise d´Issembourg du Buisson d´Happoncourt (Nancy, 11 February 1695 - Paris, 12 December 1758) writer, playwright and host of literary salons. She is the author of the famous epistolary novel "Letters of a Peruvian" published in 1747. She is considered one of the most important women in 18th century French literature. Famous in her lifetime, she fell into oblivion during the French Revolution. It was only with the advent of the feminist movement of the 1960s that she was rediscovered and new editions of her works were published. The reading of his main work, “Letters from a Peruvian”, was banned under threat of excommunication in 1765 by the Congregation of the Index of the Holy See, which included it in the Index Librorum Prohibitorum.
Pierre-Charles Levesque (or Lévêque), born March 28, 1736 in Paris, where he died March 12, 1812, was a French engraver, teacher, translator and historian. Raised to be an engraver like his father, Levesque managed to acquire a surprisingly remarkable education, despite the setbacks of his family's fortune. He then earned a living for some time as an engraver, before being appointed, at the recommendation of Diderot, professor in St. Petersburg. Leaving in 1773, he became a professor at the Saint Petersburg Cadet School from 1778 to 1780.
He used his next seven years in Russia to collect material for a comprehensive history of this country, which he published on his return to France. This work was extremely successful: even in Russia, his “Histoire de Russie” became a classic, while in France, it opened the doors of the Académie des inscriptions for him (a French Humanities society), and later of the College de France. He translated Xenophon and Plutarch for the collection of ancient moralists, and his main literary title was a proper translation of Thucydides.

Etching representing a portrait of Pierre VI Gilbert de Voisins, bust directed to the left, smiling, wearing a long, powdered wig and cravat. In an oval frame, made in 1771 by Pierre Charles Lévêque, after Duplessis.
Pierre VI Gilbert de Voisins (Paris, August 13, 1684 - April 20, 1769), lord of Voisins, Haute-Isle and Chantenesle (Mantois), marquis de Villennes, lord of Mauger, Bouconvillers, Châtelain de Villennes and de Médan, King's Advocate at Châtelet (1703), adviser to Parliament (1707), master of requests (1711), member of the Finance Council (1713), 1st Advocate-General (1718, resigned 1737), State Councillor (1740) , 1st President of the Grand-Conseil (1744), ordinary State Councillor (1747), member of the Council for Dispatches (1757).
Joseph-Siffred Duplessis (Carpentras, September 22, 1725 – Versailles, April 1, 1802) was a French painter known for the clarity and immediacy of his portraits. He was born into a family with an artistic bent and received his first training from his father, a surgeon and talented amateur. He subsequently studied with Joseph Gabriel Imbert (1666–1749), who had been a pupil of Charles Le Brun. Installed in 1752 in Paris, where he was accepted into the Académie de Saint-Luc. His portrait of the Dauphine in 1771 and his appointment as a peintre du Roi assured his success: most of his surviving portraits date from the 1770s and 1780s. Many of his portraits received a wider circulation as engravings.

Original 18th century engraving representing the portrait of a gentleman with a letter in his hand, after the oil portrait by Nicolas de Largillière, of unknown author, executed around 1700, its style is very reminiscent of the work of Gérard Edelinck (1640 Antwerp - 1707 Paris). Engraving on paper glued to cardboard, with wrinkled parts and small imperfections (see photos), which do not detract from the beauty of this work of great quality.
Nicolas de Largillière, born in Paris on October 20, 1656 and died there on March 20, 1746, was a master of the Rococo period and one of the defining figures in the 17th and 18th century art scene in France. Together with Hyacinthe Francois Rigaud he dominated the portrait art of his time and created a rich oeuvre, which is still reproduced in art prints and fascinates art lovers worldwide.
Largillière received his artistic training in the Netherlands and England, two regions that played a crucial role in his artistic development. In the Netherlands, he discovered the works of the masters Peter Paul Rubens and Anthony van Dyck, whose impressive compositions and vibrant color palette exerted a profound influence on his own style. While in England, Largillière worked as an assistant to the famous painter Peter Lely, an experience that gave him valuable insight into the professional art scene. After studying under the tutelage of Alexander Goubau in Antwerp, Largillière joined the Guild of St. Luke in 1673. His career then took him back to London, where he lived for four years until the persecutions of the Catholics finally forced him to leave England. This forced move brought Largillière back to Paris, a city he left only briefly when he was invited by James II of England to the accession to portray the king and queen.
Largillière had an impressive career. In 1705 he was appointed professor, in 1738 he rose to director, and in 1743 he finally became chancellor of the prestigious Paris Academy. He left behind an impressive number of portraits, mainly of private individuals. These works are notable for their vivid, sometimes mannered depiction, florid coloration, and witty treatment. Today they are often the subject of fine art prints that bring their beauty and sophistication to a wider audience.
Largillière focused mainly on portraits, history paintings, and still lifes. He portrayed almost exclusively members of the court and the upper middle class. This focus on the upper class gave his works a special glamor and a unique elegance that are still captured in art prints today and delight art lovers around the world. Despite the passage of more than two centuries since his death, Largillière remains a central figure in the history of French art, and his works remain an integral part of the global artistic landscape.

René Lacaze was a French jewellery designer and artist. He contributed significantly to the development of the Art Deco style. Born on 27 July 1901 in Paris, his mother was the manager of a dressmaking workshop, where he developed a particular taste for fashion as a child. With his uncle Armand Bignon, he visited numerous museums and discovered his passion for painting.
A family friend introduced him to the jewellery trade, which led him to train at the Mentel workshop in Paris, which worked with the most famous jewellers of the day: Cartier, Boucheron, Ancoc and Janésisch.
In 1923, Lacaze took up a position at Van Cleef & Arpels. In collaboration with Renée Rachel Puissant, the daughter of Alfred van Cleef, he took over the artistic and creative management of Van Cleef & Arpels in 1926. The duo invented the invisible setting technique, which allows precious stones to be set without visible prongs.
In June 1928, René Lacaze married Simone, with whom he had four children. According to his autobiography, he called himself René Sim Lacaze as a tribute to his wife.
René Sim Lacaze left Van Cleef & Arpels in 1941. He subsequently worked for Mauboussin and ran his own jewellery workshop. He created pieces for Marlene Dietrich, Michèle Morgan, Maurice Chevalier and the Duchess of Windsor.
Lacaze retired in 1968 and devoted himself entirely to painting, creating numerous watercolours. He died on 5 January 2000 at the age of 98.

Watercolour painting entitled by the artist "Heavy Legs", representing a nude, reclined woman.
Roger Coppe was a Belgian expressionist painter, sculptor, draughtsman and master glassmaker. He was born February 10, 1928 in Flawinne, near Namur. Son of an official, his family moved to Comines in 1938, where he studied classical human sciences. Subsequently, he studied decorative arts in Tournai. He became professor of history of art and aesthetics at Saint-Henri (Comines) College in 1952. At the same time, he developed his career as a draughtsman, painter and sculptor. Having become a master glassmaker, he had a stained glass workshop for nearly thirty years and restored windows of many churches in Belgium, France, Luxembourg and Congo. From 1980, his production focuses on drawing and watercolour, developing his style between a lyrical abstraction and a representation of essential lines strongly influenced by Bacon, Balthus, Dix, Daumier, etc., where the nude became essential in his work and followed aesthetic canons that are far removed from contemporary aseptic aesthetics. In 1982, he founded a fine arts academy in Comines-Warneton. From 1985 onwards, he showed his paintings at solo exhibitions in various towns in Belgium and exhibited in Brussels in 1990, Tournai in 1991 and Ghent in 1992. In that year, he began exhibiting with the group “Figuration Critique” in Paris.
Coppe painted female figures, frequently nudes, both in motion and in relaxed poses, with all muscles flexed or by contrast with softened forms. He had no hesitation about enlarging or deforming his models to achieve greater expressive force, further intensified by colours which were harsh and yet at the same time gloomy – purplish reds contracting with dirty yellows and glaucous greens.
Roger Coppe died in Mouscron (Belgium) on October 5, 2012 at the age of 84 years.
