This elegant painting pays homage to the serene and luminous style of Frederick Carl Frieseke with this copy of her painting entitled Breakfast in the Garden (ca. 1911) actually exposed in Terra Foundation for American Art in Chicago. A young woman is seated quietly in a lush garden, absorbed in handwork, while a refined tea service rests upon a green wicker table nearby. Clad in a flowing blue dress and shaded by a wide-brimmed hat, she is bathed in soft, natural light—evocative of Frieseke’s signature focus on feminine grace and the quietude of domestic leisure. The composition captures the essence of early 20th-century Impressionism: dappled light filtering through garden foliage, a gentle palette, and the intimate portrayal of a private moment.
This unframed oil on canvas made by an unknown artist of French School and created around 1930, remain unsigned. In very good condition, with some light stretching marks on the canvas (upper right corner and centre of the painting). It has a slight yellowish varnish.
Frederick Carl Frieseke (1874–1939) was an American Impressionist painter best known for his luminous depictions of women in sun-drenched garden settings and domestic interiors. Born in Owosso, Michigan, Frieseke studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League of New York before moving to Paris in 1898 to continue his artistic training at the Académie Julian. He later became associated with the Giverny art colony, where he was influenced by Claude Monet and developed a distinct Franco-American Impressionist style.
Frieseke’s work is characterized by a delicate interplay of light, color, and pattern, often featuring female figures in moments of leisure or contemplation. Though rooted in Impressionism, his style also incorporated elements of Post-Impressionism and decorative design. He gained significant recognition in both Europe and the United States, exhibiting at the Salon in Paris and winning a gold medal at the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco.
Frieseke spent much of his life in France, yet his work maintained a strong transatlantic appeal. Today, his paintings are held in major collections including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
