Henri-Alexis Schaeffer was a French designer, caricaturist, decorator and painter.Born August 9, 1900 in Paris, at the age of 19, he lived in Viroflay. He studied arts and was one of Fernand Cormon's pupils at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. On September 15, 1921 in Sèvres, Henri-Alexis Schaeffer married Olga Toussaint, also a young artist (poet, designer and painter).In 1951, he moved to Ile Rousse, in the north of Corsica, where he decorated the walls of the Chevallier family's inn-restaurant, where he painted this scene and other various landscapes of the island. In 1952, he and his wife participated together in the Salon des Artistes Français. Pierre François Edmond Van Coppenolle was born in Renaix, Belgium, on 29 June 1846. Pupil of Louis Aumont, in 1872 he moved to Montigny, close to Moret-sur-Loing in France to work at Eugène Schopin’s newly opened porcelain workshop. Here he produced sketches and studies in Indian ink, wash and crayon, which were in turn used to decorate porcelain vases and chargers. Coppenolle was renowned for his floral oil paintings. Although influenced by the 17th century painters from the Netherlands, he was also aware of the growing fashion in France for garden flowers and more natural-looking flower paintings. Delightful bird print by George Edwards from his illustrated three volume book ‘Gleaning of Natural History’ (Part 1, 1758). The descriptions for this illustration, in English and French, are found on pages 95 and 96. This print is in excellent condition, on laid paper with prominent plate marks and some watermarking. It is named, signed and dated in the plate (254) by Edwards himself. The original hand-colouring is still as vibrant and vivid as the day it was printed. Louis-François-Joseph Loncin was a Belgian impressionist painter, born August 29, 1875 in Durbuy (Wallonia). At the age of ten, his parents moved to Liège, where he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts and took anatomy lessons at a veterinary institute. He exhibited regularly between 1898 and 1937, both in Belgium and at the Salon des Artistes in Paris, where in 1928 he was nicknamed "Belgian Millet", in allusion to the pre-Impressionist painter Jean-François Millet (1814-1875).
