Jean Joly – The Bountiful Earth – 1951

Oil on hardboard representing a landscape around Vichy. The work’s title, “La terre féconde” (The Bountiful Earth) as well as a partial exhibition label - Societé des Peintres... Salon d'A(utomne?) – are found on the back. 

Jean Joly was born in Vichy (Allier) on 12 October 1900 and died in the same city on 1 September 1952. A decorative painter and president of the "Compagnons de la Peinture", he painted mainly landscapes of Bourbonnais and Auvergne.
