Giovanni Calvini (also known as Jean Calvini) was a painter of Italian origin although he lived and developed all his artistic activity in France. Born in 1840 in Coldirodi, municipality of Sanremo (Italy), little is known about his life, although he appears to have studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Marseille. Although he also painted landscapes, he was mostly known and appreciated at the time for his still lifes, exhibiting regularly at the Société des Beaux-Arts de Nice where he obtained several medals and honorary mentions. He also exhibited frequently in various art galleries in Marseille. He signed his works in equal measure as Giovanni Calvini, G. Calvini or Jean Calvini.
Calvini died on November 19, 1898 in Marseille at the age of 58, with the name of Jean Calvini on his death certificate. His works have occasionally appeared at auction, mainly in France and the United Kingdom.
This work, signed and dated 1870, has been relined and appears to have been restored in the past. This still life composition with vegetables includes a large cabbage and a portion of pumpkin surrounded by several other garden vegetables. Noteworthy are the snail on the lettuce leaf and the little fly on the potato.
