Frédéric Borgella – Young Women with Flowers – Circa 1880

Pierre-Frédéric Borgella (or Bourgella) (born May 9, 1833 in Bagneres de Bigorre, Midi-Pyrenees / died November 27, 1901 in Montrouge, Hauts-de-Seine). French orientalist painter.

Little is known of his biography and artistic career, although records show that he exhibited various works in the salons of Paris. In 1892, he married Marie-Louise Legros, and they had only one son, Léon-Henri Borgella.

Borgella devoted himself mainly to Orientalist genre painting, for a bourgeoisie eager to acquire pleasant themes to decorate their sitting rooms. His work is full of oriental dancers, harem scenes or everyday oriental female scenes or leisure. To a lesser degree, he also painted other subjects, such as religious or military scenes.
