Daniel Fillod – Autour du pain – 1987

Daniel Fillod, (Lyon, 1935-) is a contemporary French artist. A chemist by training, he is a painter, writer, poet and man of theater, a great vocation traveller and a nomad of birth. For more than 60 years, he has travelled the world filling numerous note and sketchbooks and has participated in countless exhibitions. His oeuvre, of a modern style, is graphic, a little ethnic and very colourful. Since the year 2000 he is well-known for his painted stones. He describes himself as “a traveller, a poet, and a free man,” and more recently, at age 84, “a prehistoric painter.” He still lives today in Carros, north of Nice (Alpes-Maritimes), France.

This painting was done in 1987, when he was 52 years old. On the back, he hand-wrote a text in black marker on the canvas: “Around the bread, before breaking, let’s share wars, exiles, madness, famines, and eat in silence”. The figures “5232” refer to his age when he made this work (52 years) and the number of the work (32nd) painted during that year of his life.
